Synopsis
Odalys Ferrer-Quist runs the Kestrel III, the final "mail by the pail" route on the Great Lakes, hauling letters up the sides of freighters on a rope for crews who won't touch land for months. When Meridian Freight sends surveyor Ansel Brandvold to ride along for a fourteen-day viability audit, Oda hides the ledgers that would end the argument in an afternoon — and Ansel hides that he's been to Halcyon Point before, and that he took this job to come back. Between them sits the town's Dead Letter Room and forty sealed letters from 1961 that prove the only thing worth auditing is what happens when a message finally lands.
