Orla Quintrell comes back to Quillan Harbor for three days and a signature, and finds that her grandmother Ottilie left her the Cordage Building at 9 Harbor Row with a codicil attached: forty percent of it belongs to Bram Hallick, the boatwright who has kept the roof on for eleven years and hasn't spoken her name since the night she said she'd write. Neither can sell without the other, the eastern pilings under Slipway Nine are condemned, and the town ordinance gives them until Lantern Days to prove Harbor Row is still a working waterfront — while a hospitality developer quietly buys up Ottilie's debt. Between house calls, a half-finished 1968 sloop called the Halcyon Belle, and a sea chest of letters that never reached her, Orla and Bram have to decide whether the long way back is a route they're both still willing to sail.
